Everyone is in an uproar over the discontinuation of Unisol 4 saline by Alcon.
Well, this may in fact only be a temporary situation. Word has it that the Alcon folks are working on a replacement.
Until we receive and assess the first samples of a potential new replacement product, we are currently recommending the 3 ml vials of 0.9% sterile non-preserved sodium chloride for inhalation. We have extensive experience with it and no problems have been reported yet to our office. A prescription is required. Our patients can simply call the office and we will get one out to you.
We will keep you informed of any new recommended products as soon as they become available and pass evaluation.
UPDATE March 6, 2016:
Additional replacements for Unisol 4 now include Purilens Ultra PF (http://www.purilens.com). This also comes in what appears to be a 4 ounce plastic bottle. I have heard of patients obtaining this also from the Dry Eye Shop (http://www.dryeyeshop.com) as well as on Amazon, of course.
Menicon just received approval for Lacripure (http://store.meniconamerica.com), a non-preserved saline in 5 ml vials. It can also be purchased via your scleral lens provider from CLMA laboratories who manufacture scleral lenses.
